Convertible Top Help

I have a 92 300 sl and the top wont go up or down. I have read some of the threads about another guy having trouble but tried everything he did and it still wont work. I was just wondering where is the relay located for it. I have already checked the OVP fuses and were both fine. What else could it be?? Thanks

Unfortunately there is no easy answer to why doesn't my top work. It is a complicated system with many switches opening or closing depending on where its at in the opening / closing cycle. Any one of the switches can go bad or out of adjustment causing the top module to be unable to start or complete the cycle. In addition to the numerous switches, problems with the hydraulic pump can cause the top operation to fail, not to mention that soft top module failure is not uncommon too. Also problems with the rollbar and it's module can cause the top operation to fail as well. No easy answer, your best bet it to take it to a GOOD shop and have them diagnose the problem.

If possible,

put all the side windows down individually and try to put the top down.

You can force the codes to blink on the button. This will tell you which items have problems.

Make sure the battery is in good shape

Clear all the codes

Then try the top again. Then check the codes and fix whatever the issue is that drove the problem.

The top system is simple to troubleshoot and repair. I would read, erase, and re-read diagnostic codes and report back the codes that remain upon the 2nd read. The procedure is explained here: http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r129-sl-class/1266535-diagnostics-sl-pre-94-a.html? You'll need a paper clip or short wire to short one of the sockets of your car's diagnostic connector to chassis ground.
