Which manufacturer made the OEM muffler 1986 560SL?

I think it was Eberspaecher, but before I shell out the big buck$ for one, I'd like to know if I'm buying the 'real thing' that will sound like it is supposed to. On every Mercedes I've owned, nothing ever sounded right except the original muffler. I'm not willing to pay $1000.00 for this sound though, so forget the dealer. The aftermarket thing on my SL sounds like my streetrod.

Eberspaecher made "some" of the original mufflers for that model, split contract.

Boysen & Gillet also made them.

It's a Bosal. A German manufacturer of relatively high quality after-market parts for German cars. I put an ANSA, comparable to the Bosal, on the rear of my 380sl several years ago, and it's been acceptable, but not nearly as quiet at the Eberspacher. I suppose if I had it to do again, i'd go for the Eber, considering.you can pick up a rear for under $400 vs $200 for the Bosal or Ansa.

I installed an Eberspacher in my 88 560SL two years ago. It looked identical to the original and fit perfectly. I don't know if it is the original manufacturer, but everything is the same and it is heavy duty. It's not bad to install. Removal of the old one requires removal of the "pinch clamps" and replacement of the sealing donuts. I had to carefully slit the old pipe with the edge of a cut-off tool, so it would pull loose.
