What are 280 sl owners using for engine oil?

I have a 1985 Mercedes 280 sl and need to add some oil to my engine ( via dipstick reading) and not sure what kind of oil is in there . It doesn`t need to be changed as of yet? just down a bit. What are you 280 sl owners using?

If you don't know whats in there, change the oil and filter. 10w40 oil would be fine.

Because the M110 engine has been known to experience oil passage problems in the camshaft carriage, I would use Mobil 1 as long as you don't have any existing oil leaks. This will keep the cam lobes & bearings well lubricated.

As a matter of fact I do have a small oil leak from somewhere. This is not my cars most pressing problem at present. Need to get my flex discs looked at . Take a look at the posts under Driveline Noise if interested . Regards mister bill

In your climate I would go with 10/40 conventional.
