R 129 top installation

I've put on my share of soft tops in the past but this was as they say very tedious, the book calls for 17 plus hrs. I found that one of the most difficult parts is getting the contact cement off all the rails and bows. other than that its just slow and careful work. The best aid that I found short of an all data down load was a dvd that I purchased from ebay showing the offical M/B teaching aid for removal and installation of the soft top, you follow it step by step using a lap top and it's great. The biggest piece of advice I can give someone in doing this job is to spend 6 to 8 hundred and get a quality top for the best results everything fits so much easier...Good Luck.....

Congrats, AFAIK you are one of the few that have dared to do this on a 129 themselves (I did this on a 107).

A seller on eBay called richandfamousautotops has quality R129 tops for $350. There are 14 videos produced by Mercedes that show installation step-by-step on this website: http://www.classic-roadster.de/modules.php?set_albumName=Filme-r129-demontage-Verdeck&op=modload&file=index&name=gallery&include=view_album.php.

Bob,

Thanks for the link to soft top instructions. I had planned to replace my top soon sine the back window has cracked and many worn spots.

I had always wanted to do it myself so these instructions will give me the courage!

Have you installed one of the ebay tops?

Dan

I have the non-multiplexer type available. To make connections to different systems at the diagnostic socket you need to use a paper clip and jumper leads. With the multiplexer type you just plug in the diagnostic cable.

I have not, Dan. But I know someone who bought one and had it professionally installed. It looks fine.
