Try a new gas cap.

gas smell
Look for fuel line leaks at the fuel filter-pumps assembly under the rear of the car while it is running. If the fuel filter was changed without using new copper gaskets a leak can develop with sustained vibration. If the leak is minor, it will not affect engine performance but will smell.
Fuel cap is a good bet if no leaks as is a leak at the filler pipe between the tank and the fill hole. The 560SL also has a history of developing leaks at the fuel distributor but that often is felt in engine performance. |

If you only smell the fuel at start up and then clears up, I would check the cold start valve for leakage.

2nd that. Its located right infront of the air cleaner on the right hand (above cyl 5) It has a metal fuel line going to it with a 14mm (IIRC) nut on it.

This gas smell is MBZ's code that tells you that you are not driving a Diesel.
Sorry, I couldn't resist. I agree w/the cold-start valve possibility. I would also check the gas-line vent valve & its connections.
