Clicking noise from Air Pump?

I have searched with multiple key words but no luck.

My 1982 380SL has in the last few days developed a clicking/ticking noise that appears to be coming from what I assume is the Air Pump directly below the Alt on the front passenger side of engine compartment. It’s loud enough to hear in the driver’s seat.

The MBZ CD/manual does not give any clue as to testing procedure that I have been able to find. Is it going bad? Is there a way to accurately test it? As always, any assistance is greatly appreciated!

Tim

ticking/clicking noise

Hi,

I have a problem of ticking/clicking coming from my 1985 380sl (120K miles) as well. It seems to come from a unit that is bolted on the top of the front of the engine on the passenger side. The unit has a linkage going underneath the air filter and one wire running to the front of the car. I'm not sure what it is. It says Mercedes Benz 408201/1/5 and 0025458832 VDO. It clicks when cold, and I turn on the ignition (without starting the engine). It also clicks while the engine is running. Is your noise the same? Does anyone have some advice for me, too?

Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff,

It does not sound like the same issue. Mine is pretty loud and only makes the noise when the engine is running. Possibly you could take a picture of the part that is in question and someone may be able to give you a suggestion. You might also consider purchasing the CD/Manual from MBZ. They are not expensive and will be a big help to you now, and in the future.

Tim -

It sounds to my like the clutch in the air pump is on it's way out. Look under Engine, Intake & Exhaust Manifolds on the CD. Suggest unplugging the electrical connector and seeing if that stops the noise.

Jeff -

You are looking at the cruise control unit. I am unsure what would cause it to click.

Chuck,

As always, Thank You!

I have been up to my elbows in grease getting equipment ready for winter. I will check it out before putting the SL in "hybernation" for the winter.

Thanks again!

Tim
