1990 SL Windscreen

A rock has gone though my windscreen. Mercedes tell me I have to purchase a whole new windscreen to "repair" it.

Does anyone know of another solution? I'd like to purchase the fabric and remount it but alas a pipe dream.

Thanks

Alex

The frame "halves" of the windscreen seem to be able to be separated with a slim flat tool. The REAL problem here is finding a "transparent" material to replace the damaged one.

I have yet to find any sites that would have the material. Perhaps an upholstery shop could help.

Cheapest I've seen the entire unit go for is $400!!!

Any chance that it could be replaced by your car insurance?

That's the problem exactly: the fabric. Thank you. I'm unable to find the fabric anywhere. You'd think with windscreens poping up everywhere someone somewhere for some amount of... consideration (exchange value, money, cash, loot, etc) would be willing to sell or trade.

Insurance is not an option because of my high deductable and it would really frost me if I used my insurance to replace the screen only to discover later that it had been repaired as I originally wanted.

Thank you for your reply. And I will keep looking and hoping...

Alex

Have you check out e-Bay? I saw one for sale last week. I don't recall how much since I am not in the market for one. Good luck.

...just curious...windscreen as in the glass that is glued in at the front side of the car which makes it able to see the road?
I don't get the "halves" and "upholstery store" in combination with "windscreen", but maybe my english is running short...

greetingz,

We Americans refer to your "windscreen" as a "windshield"...the glass front window.

On this thread, we are talking about the wind deflector, the add-on that fits onto the rollbar and keeps your hair from blowing all over the place when you are driving with the top down.

It is known as a wind "screen" in this country because of the definition of "screen". An example is the metal mesh on outside doors that allow air to flow through, but keeps bugs out. The mesh fabric on the wind deflector has similar properties, hence the "windscreen" nomenclature...

...a "screen" allows some things to pass through, whereas a "shield" prevents anything from passing through. So a wind "shield" by our definition is the front window that "shields" the driver from the wind, as opposed to the wind "screen" that allows some air to pass through, reducing the annoying turbulence that normally accompanies open-air motoring.

Of course, we have different standards of measurement too, so I can understand the confusion...
