door adjustments

Is there anything special to know about adjusting doors on an '88 560SL? I just bought a beautiful SL with a ton of miles on it. Overall, it is in immaculate condition and drives very well. However, with 161K miles, the doors have been opened and closed many times and do not close well now. They have to be slammed harder than I like. I don't like slamming doors. MB doors should close easily and firmly. My '57 Chevy doors and the doors on my Town Car close the way I like.
Can any mechanic or bodyman easily adjust my SL doors?

Is it the door or the window? I've never seen a 560 with an out of whack door, but almost every one has the window out of adjustment, or broken window alignment pieces.

Check this thread and specifically post # 22. Your car I believe has the same door closing mechanisms as the w123.

Same as the W114 and W115 as well.

There is a small bump on the plastic portion of the latch mounted on the B pillar. If this is worn/missing, it results in a hard to close door.

Solution is to locate a sedan and get the rear door latch.

They are side specific, but are the same front and rear.

thanks for this thread guys I have always had a problem closing my doors and no amount of adjustment made any difference. I swear that the slamming has caused half of the electric window problems I have had to fix. Following the advice here and after a PM to Jim who explained that i want the rear ones as they are less used (sorry about that Jim, I must have been on the wine again )

Anyway i picked up a set off a 115 yesterday (back doors) and installed this morning. I see what Jim meant, on both of mine the rubber surround had sunk down and was obscuring the bottom of the striker. A huge difference they now close with a solid clunk tight up against the door seals, I love it

thanks everyone

Thanks to everyone who took the time to reply. I just purchased a pair or strikers from the rear doors of a W123. We were unsuccessful at adjusting the originals.
BTW, a local shop that is frequented by XKE's, Austin Healey's, and a good number of SL's quoted me 'around $125' to adjust the doors. What's that come to for an experienced mechanic, $250/hour. Glad I didn't just fall out of the trees this morning.
