Thumbs down 129 Radio sound fading 300SL-1991

I have a Becker radio with the OMB set-up. When I turn the volume up on the Becker the sound starts to break up, then I turn the volume down and the sound become somewhat full. This problem did not occur over night but slowly over the last year an a half, and now I have to keep the radio very low or the sound will cut in and cut out, thanks for your help.

That "radio" exists in 3 pieces. The head / control unit in the dash, the receiver and low power amp in the trunk ( left side ) and the high power woofer amplifier under the front seat. The small speakers are connected to the amplifier in the trunk. The large speakers are connected to the amp under the seat. A known issue is for the capacitors in the woofer amplifier to get old and fail. Unless you're a good electronic tech, you will need to go to a professional for help on rebuilding the amp. Another possiblity is a dirty connection at one of the plugs and jacks of the wiring harness between the various components. You could try cleaning with spray contact cleaner from Radio Shack. In my 1991, it was indeed the capacitor problem. But the final solution for me was a new after market receiver and rewiring the speakers directly to it.

Ok, is the amp under the driver or passenger's seat? Should you remove the seat, and how do you remove the seat? Thanks.
