If you have to go earlier than 1975, look for a grey market 350SL with the 3.5L M116 motor. A scarce few had a manual transmission as well.

The euro 3.5 was a nice high winding motor, quite the antithesis of the 4.5L smog slug we got.

The 280SL is nice, I have one, and prefer it over the V-8s. Seems more agile to me, but I tend to prefer finesse over brute force.

Jim

My '74 was soooo easy to install mega-squirt which is way cheaper than repairing the ECU and will get at least 6 miles to gallon better milage....i also have a '73 that that is a 350SLC and hoping to put the heads on and gain the 9.5:1 compression ratio and will take them to local head shop and flow them better...with mega squirt you can just adjust your VE tables to compensate for any thing you do..i am planning on getting the cams reground for little more zing. heads are my next winters project when i take out the engine and detail bay..Right now i am just reinstalling seats and then off driving to adjust fuel tables ..now on the CIS injection its much more work ...Jeff

This has been an interresting thread. I have a '74 450 SL and do not have the catalytic converters. My understanding is that they started using them in '75 and were under the hood that year. After heat problems I believe they were moved to under the chassis in '76..............Dan

I think the California-spec '74s had cats.
