No brakes?
I've got an '83 380SL. Yesterday morning, halfway to work, the brake pedal went right to the floor... no brakes. I can pump them tight with the engine off, when cranked the pedal goes back to the floor. There's fluid in the master cylinder and there does not appear to be any leaks. Any ideas where to start?

You will likely find the master cylinder wall pitted with corrosion.

If you are not seeing any leaks, then the fluid is leaking into the booster.
You need to flush the booster out or else the brake fluid will ruin the booster. Jim

I had the same problem on my 88 560, replaced the master cylinder, bled it and good as new. Had a tough time on the brake line fittings going into the cylinder, spray them a day in advance. No fluid leaked anywhere, going on 1 year since repair. Bought the part from Phil, built a power bleader out of a garden sprayer as found on the forum.
Good luck

master cylinder
A loss of braking with no loss of fluid generally indicates master cylinder failure, specifically the piston seal. In that case. fluid is passing from the front to the rear of the master cylinder piston thus eliminating the front-to-rear pressure differential necessary to proper operation.
In most cases, a rebuilding kit for the master cylinder is available that, among other things, restores the piston seal. See Phil at FASTLANE on this site for parts. Note that if the cylinder bore is significantly scored or pitted, rebuilding will not work. In the case of light damage, the master cylinder can be honed. There are also a few Benz models (I do not know which) that have non-rebuildable master cylinders. Phil knows all this. Let us know how you make out. |

Master cylinder went Tango Uniform - rebuild or replace.
