Well, my Mityvac eventually arrived and I now realise the usefulness of this tool! How did I ever think I'd be able to sort out all the vacuum leaks without it? I've had to replace 4 check valves and found three leaks in the seat-back locking system. The vacuum storage tank tests OK. Central locking system also tests OK.
I also set the engine's timing according to the vacuum gauge as per Barri's advice and can get a max of 16 inches Mercury at idle, but nothing higher. I still have a leak somewhere in the climate control system, so I've disconnected that for now and a slow leak in the cruise control actuator.

Very informative thread. My '73 450 revs 50-75 RPM when I press and hold the pedal. I will test the check valve today. There is also an O-Ring between the master cylinder and the booster that could get old and leak I guess.
