Wiring loom replacement for a '93?

Hi all

Can someone point me to the step by step instructions on replacing the wiring loom (1295401706) for my SL500?

Would be much appreciated as it's nearly time....then onto the ETA...eeeeek

Lea

The 6 cylinder version, well illustrated:
http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/M104WireHarness

Once you start, you'll be surprised how easy it is on the V8 as well.

Begin at the firewall connection, then just remove and replace the various connectors, using the existing loom as a guide.
At about halfway through the process, cut the old harness (NOT the new one!) through and discard, then proceed forward.
8 injectors, grounds, and a bunch of sensors, and you're done.

Thanks Phil

I also have to do the ETA , and it looks as though I don't need to remove the inlet manifold...That's definately going to save some time!

In terms od the wiring loom refit, is the 6 pot similar to the 8 then? Guessing so.

Cheers
Lea

The V8 is considerably easier than the six, fewer than half the end points. Just stay organized and you can't really go wrong, maybe take a few pictures before you start.

Cheers deanyel

My father-in-law's going to do the replacement and he has 50 years in the garage mechanic industry so I'm not concerned but any info that helps makes the 'gotchas' go away is always a bonus. Guessing it's straight forward though. Might take a few pics and post on here for others...

Cheers all.

That's a great idea -- I never seem to think about it until I'm done with the job.

good luck on the harness change. will be doing mine soon also. i have a 94 sl500 with the dreaded rot and amlooking forward to the change. i will also be doing caps and rotors with the needed rotor adaptors, fuels filter with sleeve. the cars ran great, so i'll save the plug wires for next years tax check. still need to get the radio code as the bat when dead while in storage, but shouldn't be too hard to get. i have the servicing dealer info from the PO. that's the theory anyway, we'll see. come on spring!

Your original rotor bracket should be fine on a 94.

Rotor adaptors?

When I bought my SL (5 years now) I change the caps and rotors, that lasted one year before I had to begin the 6 monthly de-tracking and clean, and they are original Bosch ones!

They give me so much grief these caps I hate them! Mind you that's nothing to my blasted ETA unit, or wireloom. Blasted ASR light!

The value of these cars is so low now I was sorely tempted to simply purchase a newer one, but mine isn't saleable, so no choice

I'm looking forward to carrying out the loom and ETA change...just want my baby to drive again...

That's strange, I have no problems with 119 caps and rotors, maybe humidity the problem. I also have no problems with ETAs, and no problems with ASR light, no problems with limp home mode - because I don't have ASR. There are so few 129s without congenital problems. I think you'd find a nice 94-95 SL320 w/o ASR to be a great car.
