86 560SL SUBFRAME MOUNTS W/PICS

1.I jacked my560sl at four points.I also had the trans jacked because I was replacing flex plates at the time.I had the large jack near the spring
hole to tension the subframe against the main frame. One Side at a time
mind you.2.I took the two main bolts out of the mounts then the slide nuts out.3.Then took the outer tie rod apart.4.Then took off the nut off the small motor shocks on the side of the engine. Also undid the fan shroud for movement of the engine.5.Unscrewed the two
small shock nuts on the bottom of the shock.6.Undid the nuts on the sway bar and took it apart.7 Dropped the subframe REAL SLOW till I got about 3
Inches down(Constantly Watching the Rubber Brake LINE!!)I did not have
to take the brakes off.I stuck a large screw driver up from the bottom
and popped the screw driver with a large hammer and the mounts
came right out.(Bad shape mind you.Blew the holes out with air gun.Soap
and watered the new mounts and see sawed them in with the big screw
driver.Jacked up the subframe against the main frame, put the bolts back in,BUT I did not use the new slide nuts because they did not fit in the hole.I used the old ones.Do the reverse and button it back up.ONE REMINDER MAKE SURE YOU LINE UP THE SMALL SHOCK TOWERS IN THE
HOLE BESIDE THE ENGINE (BEFORE) YOU TENSION THE SUBFRAME AGAINST THE FRAME.3 hrs 1st side,45 minutes 2nd side.Slow learning
curve for this "ol Paratrooper"

Nice job Paratrooper!, and great pics!. Very useful step-by-step procedure. Two points: did you replace engine mounts at the same time? and you dont mention supporting the engine while dropping the subframe but supported the tranny instead? a lot of wheight overhung on that engine!. Well done!

mounts

Yes I had previously put in the motor mounts earlier.I had put those off
because I wasn't sure exactly how to do it.I did alot of research before I
attempted it and Chuck Taylor reminded me to take pictures because it
hadn't been done before. And yes I had six jacks up and running, all 4 tires
off,so I had 2 in the rear, the 2 big black jacks you see in front just a little behind the jack holes.I had the trans jacked up because the drive shaft was unhooked and the engine was supported also. After 100 military jumps,35 yrs in the Infantry,Viet Nam,I was not taking any chances.Too
old!!!
