Car Crash

Hi Guy's..........My wife was in an accident in our 1974 450SL last week. It was not her fault and the at fault driver has insurance. The car may be totaled, at this point the value of the car has not been established yet. I am looking for some help with determining the value of the car. It has 59,000 miles showing on the odometer and was an everyday use car, although we only put about 1500 miles on it each year for the two years we have owned it. I have done quite a bit of work on this car such that everything worked on it. The interior is original but in very good shape, same for the exterior except that the paint was crazed in some areas. Can anyone help me out with the value of it....?????.................Dan

Hope your wife wasn't injured. Looks pretty bad. Check here.

You also have what you paid for it and major repairs that were done as a starting point for negotiation.

I would have the frame checked out to make sure it didnt get bent. How fast was the car going when it happened?

Wrecked euro headlamps...what a shame, they dont make thoes anymore....

the sheet metal and hood should be easy finds,

the bumper is an obvious one...

the frame definitely needs to be checked out...

overall it could be fixed in the backyard if the frame checks out, the only PITA part is paint, but its a great excuse to get the whole car painted whatever you like...

its probably worth around $6500...

I would have beat the at fault drivers a.s.s for that...

I didn't know those old SLs had frames. I thought every Mercedes-Benz made was of monocoque unibody construction.

I guess I should qualify my last post. The Euro headllamp assembly is still available for his model 107. I do not know if it still available for the later models with the vacuum adjustment.

Hi Guy's...Thanks for all your feedback. My wife was not hurt but a couple of the people involved were. It was estimated that she was going about 30 miles per hour. She hit a full sized pickup truck on the right front wheel. The impact spun the truck around and into the next lane where it was struck again by the car in the next lane. I have been out of town for a week but now that I am back I will get in touch with the insurance company today. I will post any new info...........Dan

I feel for you Dan. April was not a good month for SL's it looks like. Here is mine after being hit on April 15. Mine was insured with Hagerty for an agreed value of $25K. A check in that amount is on the way - very little hassle, but I'd still rather have the car.

Hi Len.....Sorry about your car, I agree with you, I would rather have the car than the money.

My insurance company will be paying me $9500.00 for the car. It's a fair price as I paid $7500.00 for the car and put about $2000.00 into it to bring it up to good condition for driving everyday. We are now looking for another car......Dan

Can you purchase the wrecked car from the insurance company? Save it- it is worth a repair job- the miles make it so- plus you could piece it together at your leisure-have fun-learn about the car in more detail-then sell it or keep it- they may take 1500 for it...you never know unless you ask...
