SL500 Air filter replacement
Hi, I just purchased a 2002 SL500. I am doing some minor maitenance and found it is not that simple to access the air filter. I have not used to much force to remove the top due to fear of breaking anything. Any ideas how to remove the air filter. Also I will be using K&N. What is the opinion on K&N?
Thanks |

Do a search on K&N on this and other sites and then use the MB recommended filter. Save your money and don't get caught in the hype.

Not a K&N fan here.
1: They are less effective at their purpose (filtering) than paper filters. Their comparatively poor micron rating allows larger dirt particles in than regular paper filters, and they also allow a greater quantity of crap in generally. The 2 horsepower increase or whatever you get is not worth it to me, for the tradeoff of sucking a bunch of extra crud into the motor. 2: They are easy to over-oil, at which point your $10 filter upgrade will cost you a $400 MAF. Another potentially expensive tradeoff I'm not willing to make. |

Steps...Remove the engine cover(s), 2 pieces front and rear. Just lift up and toward the front of the car. Turn the rear cover upside down on the ground/grass and you'll see 5 or 6 TorX screws...use the right size bit to remove the screws and expose the filters. Pull old filters out, clean any debris out of the 'airbox', install new filters, replace screws, reinstall on the car. It shouldn't take you more than 15-20 minutes to complete. Not a bad idea to spray some CRC MAF Cleaner into your MAF housing while you're at it. Have Fun! Bob
