Simply 1983 AMG; love those AMG engineers. I've been meaning to put a video camera on the rear shelf and take her for a spin so you can really hear the music. It's worth sharing.

I've been driving my SLC 5.0 and my 500SLC a lot in recent days. They both make good daily drivers although I always seem to find myself going faster in the 500SLC then I should be.

I was trying to help a friend check the snot level in her SL. Where is the snot dip stick? She wanted to know if she'd driven the snot out of it, but we couldn't be sure.

If my SL-C counts then Im totally guilty. I have straight pipes going back to the stock muffler and boy does she sound good at low rpms, at higher rpms you cant hear any difference from inside the cabin. No resonators, no cats....

I ran my SL-C in the quarter mile track the other night, I warmed her up by sprinting at 115mph down the highway... She still gets up and goes for being 31 years old and practically stock...

I drive the hell outta her and she begs for more....

Hello

Beautiful day today and I put on 270 miles driving around the Catskill mountains. One incident though. I suddenly came upon and at 60 mph ran over two pieces of conduit pipe joined together by what looked like a six gang junction box. It was nine or ten feet long and laid completely across my lane. GOD awful noise. The pipe ripped apart at the junction box, half shooting out to the right from under my car and the other half shooting to the left. The only thing that seems to have taken the hit is my mid muffler which now leaks more and makes considerably more noise than it did before. Looks like I will be replacing it sooner than I had hoped. Cold have been a lot worse so I'll take it. The car though seems to vibrate more at idle. Could compression loss at the mid muffler cause a rough idle?

Nope.

I've run mine w/o the cross-over pipe (107100 in image below) w/ no ill effect other than noise (actually, she sounded great to me, just not to my neighbors ).

Is it possible the incident created or exacerbated a vacuum leak? Did any of it hit the fuel pump/filter assembly?

I was wondering if the pipes are restrictive. Looking under my 500SLC, it seems like the pipes are 1 3/4 inch wide with multiple boxes. I was considering running straight 2.5 inch pipes all the way to a magnaflow resinator.

It seems like I may be able to free up some trapped power from there.

Hey alabbasi,

There has been some discussion about this recently:

Exhaust Cross-Over Necessary? (early R107)
Exhaust Volume/Tone (early R107)

And if you want to study exhaust science this article is VERY enlightening:
http://www.popularhotrodding.com/enginemasters/articles/hardcore/0505em_exh/index.html

I'm currently in the process of designing a system for my '72, but I'm not in any rush, as I won't be able to afford it until (hopefully) later in the summer (damned economy ).

OK. Today I went under the car to give it a good look over and check for damage after running over the conduit pipe and junction box. I found a good reason to leave in that crossover pipe that joins the two pipes between the manifold and mid muffler. That cross over pipe took a big hit and it is now bent and dented. However if it didn't take the hit, the transmission pan directly behind it would have.
