450sl Catalytic Coverter removal or relocation

Hi - I have a 1976 450sl which has the cats mounted under the hood which as many of you are aware cooks everything under the hood and makes the car quite hot on summer days. Is there a reliable way to move them more downstream or would it be advisable to remove them altogether? The car is only driven a thousand miles or so a year in the Summer and in CT is no longer required to go through emissions inspections. Thanks in advance.

no cat

Hi there

Just remove them - these cars were designed NOT to have cats. They were only fitted to the US versions, none of the Euro models had them. I seem to remember more than one post on this topic from "over there" about removal.

I guess you'll have to do some "butchery" on the exhaust and re-adjust the fuel/ignition but you'll get a much better performance and no "hot hood".

Cheers

Jim
