Removing the hood

What are some tips on removing the hood on the 560SL? The hinge can be disconnected via the clip at the hood or via the hex bolt into the fender well. Any advantage to one over the other? I already discovered that by disconnecting only one of the big springs on the hood that it won't remain upright will fall and hit you on the head.

IIRC, as it's been 2 years, prop the hood up with a stick(s) and remove both clips and detach the spring/lever arm assemblies on both sides. Before undoing the bolts for the hinges, mark the position of the hinge to the hood to make re-assembly a snap, with no alignment issues.
A good way to do this is to drill a 1/8" hole through the the hood frame into the hinge, between the bolts. When it comes time to re-attach, insert a drill bit into the hole to hold it in alignment while tightening the bolts.
The hood is really light, but awkward. I propped mine up, removed all but 1 bolt on each hinge, then put blankets under where the corners would drop, removed each remaining bolt while guiding the corners down to the blankets. It can then be lifted up and away from the car.

Thanks Don. No need to realign here because the car is eventually going to the junk yard. However, I did remove the two bolts for each hinge yesterday. This allowed the hood to tip forward on the center pivots/supports. Got a friend coming over tonight. We will pop the clips off and remove the hood. Should be easy now. No hard hat required.
