Why not just do the 1st gear start manually, so you don't always start in first? Foot on brake, shift from D to 1 and back to D. Starts off in first gear and does all the work for you.

Folks on Benzworld are happy with this: http://www.fgsswitch.com/english/downloads_eng.html.

A quick and easy alternative is to wire a momentary switch in parallel with the B-switch on the shifter. When the car is at rest if you want a 1st-gear switch you briefly press the switch. No soldering to install -- remove the wood cover for the console to access the B-switch and shove a pair of wires into its connector. Tie-wrap each wire to the existing wire it is in parallel with so that it won't come out. On a 500SL I owned with non-functioning ASR I used the snow chain switch for the 1st-gear start.
