1986 560SL Radio Problem

Is there a special tool or something special you have to do to reset the radio on a 1986 560SL? The car has 4 dashes across the faceplate and nothing I do corrects those dashes like on other Mercedes where you can enter a radio code.

Sounds like you have the Becker 754 grand Prix. Dealer has reset tool, no code.

Or you can send it to Becker, and they will replace the battery and tune up the radio, it's around $125 last time I sent one.

Hi, There is a security plug in wire on the passenger side of the radio, if you do not plug this back in to the radio after you reset the codes you will not have this issue again. ( I think.)

It was several years ago that I had this happen to me and my MB dealer did reset it for me. I have replaced the radio with a CD-AM- FM since. See if you can find a vintage radio repair shop. Yellow pages is a big help. Best of luck. Jack.

I bought a replacement on ebay, they are there all the time and cheap. Mine worked fine (88 560SL) with no code.

On that era Becker, there is no code as has been stated. If the radio must be reset, it must be done with a special tool available at Becker and some dealers. However, according to the manual, the only time the radio needs to be reset is if it is removed while the alarm system is turned on, i.e. a theft protection system. I have had the radio in and out of my 560SL several times with the battery connected and disconnected and never once did I need to have to reset the radio. The internal battery in my radio is also long dead, so that wasn't what allowed me to do it either.
