I am lifting the engine out for several reasons. I want to work on the front of the engine, the timing chain cover and install a reluctor on the crankshaft. Second reason is to get a good lookover the transmission. There are seals to replace. Another reason is to replace the subframe bushings and inspect everything and detail the engine bay.

Attention to detail is everything for a R107. Shifting linkage bushings not installed from the prior lifting.
When pulling the engine I found it easier to remove the starter terminals when I raised the engine. |

When I pulled the engine out I found a few issues. Yes the lower chain guide receives a beating when you lose a chain, lose a chain guide mount bolt or a chain guide itself. An assistant holds remnants of the lower chain guide. You can see the deeply cut ridges in the chain guide.
Another picture This is what the bottom end of a 117 engine looks like. This one was bored 10 thousands of an inch over. Never pull the main caps off until you remove the pistons and connecting rods first. I have taught engine rebuilding and the first thing students want to do is disconnect the main bearing caps. The engine will sieze up when you try to rotate the crank. Rotate the crank to where the piston and connecting rod is straight and inline with the cylinder. Cover up the bolts with rubber hose. this protects the crankshaft. This is a picture of one of the pistons. The passenger bank pistons were taking in oil through the head gaskets. The combustion chamber cannot burn off all the oil. |

Eve removing and replacing one of these Mercedes SL powertrains is not for the faint hearted. Having all of the necessary tools at hand is a must. Attempting the job yourself without adequate tools can quickly turn into a nightmare. You are not dealing with a domestic, Mercedes is a completely different animal.

I am picking up two Mercedes, one a 74 450SL and the other a 74 SEL with a car hauler. I need the parts and got these for a song. Rust buckets and rough.
