Looks to be a 5 speed. I think they were called 300SL_24 in the UK but it's been a while since I was last there so i could be wrong.

All 6 cyclinder SL's from that vintage have the 24 valve engine. A 5 speed manual is rare, but there were a lot more than 5 imported to the US. A fellow down the street from me drives one. It looks like a beautiful car. If I were in the market, I'd check into it. I own almost the identcal car, but with the 5 speed automatic. I feel these cars are selling at a steep discount to their value. A car like this should be worth $15K, but will probably go for much less.

I did not think that the 24 valve came until much later. Or was it available earlier outside the US?

I put the VIN in the EPC, and the car came up as a "300 SL 24.". The Datacard shows it equipped as described. IMO, it's a legit US car. It certainly looks clean from the pictures.

Is the "300 SL 24" rear badge common? I know the owner could have simply stuck on the 24, but don't recall seeing many (any?) others of these with the 24 designation, but am sure I am wrong.
Nice car, too bad it wasn't available 2 months ago when I bought my 320 - I actually wanted the standard tranny. j

Hmm ...
I haven't seen one either, that I can recall. I went back to the EPC and it shows "300 SL" as the correct trunk badge for the car. There is no "300 SL 24" badge shown.
It does come up in the 300 SL model. There is even a separate part for the little dash (missing on this car), but for some reason, it won't show the part numbers. Probably a non-US piece.

Only gotcha on these cars is the engine.
Both this model and the 300CE had a rather low production 3.0L M104 engine, and some control parts are unique to the 3.0L version, hence hard to find used, and quite costly new. Jim
