Antenna mast - smooth cord vs. toothed cord?

Are the antenna masts - early smooth cord vs. later toothed cord - interchangeable, or is the gearing inside the antenna different too? Or does it not matter, and the toothed cord will work in an earlier antenna regardless?

I can't remember which is older and which is newer, but the toothed mast goes on the unit with the smooth wheel and vise versa. You can, however, use the toothed mast with either smooth or toothed wheel.

The wheel in mine is not so much toothed as it is serrated. That is if you're talking about the large metal wheel sitting on top of the plastic gear? I just figured that the toothed would be easier for said wheel to grab.

There is an important difference.I been down this road.I ordered the toothed and it almost ruined my unit.Once I bought the proper
smooth all is well.I think 79 and older used the Hirschmann 6000 auta.
You need to verify.
