What are people thinking?

I am usually on the diesel department, but I went to look at an 85 280 sl the other day, listed as parts or repair, really should be repaired. (When I talked to the seller, it was clear that he did NOT want to part out.)
The windshield and top are 3 or 4 years old, the engine has about 115k (in kms) on it according to said owner.
The front bumper is 1/2 on the ground, fenders have holes and evidence of a prior bondo body job and the frame rail has punched up through the floor pan, it has been parked on grass for a while. When I asked what kind of money they wanted, I was told $2000!!
Maybe I need a reality check?

You can ASK anything you want. But I agree, people are nuts. They think they own a goldmine. The fact is, most 107's that exist now are weekend/summer cars or garage queens and the "good" parts available are from unfortunate wrecks or engine failures. Nasty, rusted cars are not of much use to people who want to maintain their good cars.

My realtor in Atlanta once told me...you can ASK anything you want for your property, and eventually, you will get it. Either tomorrow, or 60 years from now!

It doesn't help when KBB is listing r107s in the high teens, low twenties as "blue book value" for good condition.

I saw that car on Kijij, and emailed him for an opening price. The response was to make a 'decent offer'. Now I know what 'decent' is I guess. I was thinking of using the front and rear subframes/engine/etc. for a streetrod project, selling off the parts to offset costs, but changed my mind. From what you describe, the car was hit hard on the front. If the subframe is bent, it's a parts car for sure, so you might want to add up the going prices on EBay, or here too for that matter, to see if $$ could be made. I seriously doubt you'd make much with an initial $2000.00 (CDN of course) investment though.
BTW Is it a 6 cyl or 8...and is it a 380SL? I thought the 280SL was 1968 - 71

It is a 380 sl, 8 cyl, advertised as 1985. No hit as far as I can tell, the prior bondo job appears to have been rust repair, the dropped bumper and the frame rail are due to rust, not much left of the drivers floor pan, and not much more left of the rockers (don't even THINK about the jack holes).

Last inspection sticker was 2005.

They made a 107 280SL from 1974 to 1985. M110 engine. In line 6 DOHC. Euro only. Many made their way to the US during the gray market hay days. Some even came with manual trans.

All SL current owners should be happy that people are asking high prices. Maybe it will drive the value up over time of the ones we own.

Wouldn't that be a good thing?

It all depends on whether you're buying or selling.

As CURRENT owners...we should promote high prices instead of knocking them down.
Our day will come when we wish or need to sell.

You are correct, and now that I own one, I'd like it to be extraoridinarily valuable.

I'm just thrilled that when I bought one, it was cheap.
