another Steering issue on the ol gal - 72 450SL

since I am working on the ol gal , thought I would renew the filter in the PS reservoir. I got the period correct porus ring and when I went to change it , out came a one piece metal deal. According to my shop manual I should have a upper and lower pressure plate with this porus ring. As you all know I like original setup, but I cannot seem to source these upper and lower plates. Any one parting that might have these?

Heck if I know. I can't remember where I put the pump. It may still be attached. I am not going out this late to look. There are boogie men out there. If I have the plates they are yours.

I will try to remember to look in the morning. If you don't hear back by noon email me.

I just recently changed the filter in my PS too. (Also a '72). So far as I recall, the porus ring sits on a bottom plate, a disc fits above the filter and a spring pushes down to hold everything in place when you screw the cap on. This is the filter:

The diagram on page 46.7-740/5 shows the type I have. On page 740/9 it shows a metal basket type of filter.

Don't know where you would get those plates new, if they are missing. But maybe available used?

Rowdie, please avoid the boggie man, we need you here. Graham I cannot find them new, I am sure they are specific to the early 70's but perhaps not just to SL's
surely someone has a set lying about!

Do you have the metal separate tank above the PS pump? Just wondered if the whole thing might have been changed?

Or was the one you took out one of the new type, like this? Someone might have put the wrong part in. But, hopefully Rowdie can help you!

My '72 only has one plate with holes in it. It sits above the filter. The PN on the reservoir is 116.460.01.83.

This got confusing but the EPC only shows a plate (they call it a washer 0002360076) that sits above the filter on the filter you are using.

I have if you need it.

My 74 is like this also!
I don't think they went to the pleated paper until 75/76

The metal plate with holes is held down by a spring and nut.If you need these 2 pieces let me know. They would be the same on a 116 or 107 I'm pretty sure.Easy to locate those right nor as a result of the "clunkers" program....Yards are overflowing with stuff out here in CA

I only had the upper plate.

Winecountry. If you find there is a plate under the original porous filter please let us know as my '73 and the '72 donor do not have one. All that is under the filter are a mounting bolt and an opening for fluid flow.

Where we live in canada, there are NO MBs in the yards. I asked and they said that all cars before 1990 had been crushed.

Are there any on-line methods of checking what those yards have? There are things like fuel pumps, Aux Air Valves, MPSs, Trigger points, injectors, sensors, distributors, etc that would be such a shame to crush, especially for our old D-Jet cars.

There are no online search functions for the pick-n-pull chain. You pay your 2$ admission, and it is good all day at that or any other location.

I have given thought to buying any of this stuff I can get and stockpiling it.The computers,MAP sensors, trigger points,AAV,and other d-jet stuff are rapidly becoming unobtanium. It would be a niche market for sure, but at the flat rate prices they charge it might be worth it.

I "make the rounds" of all the ones in my area(There are about a dozen within a 75 mile radius)pretty regularly. If there are specific items anyone wants feel free to PM me with a want list and I'll keep my eyes peeled.
