Sheet metal plate over fuel pump/filter on D-jet SL

Does anyone know just how "critical" is is to have this in place?
Mounting holes in the frame are stripped out,PO had it held in place with nylon zip ties
It rattles and flexes over even the slightest bumps, makes quite the racket which I'm getting very tired of hearing!
I was thinking of just removing it,but MBZ had to put it there for a reason?
I don't go "offroad" where rocks and debris would likely damage anything(mostly all freeway driving)
I would have to buy a tap set to oversize the holes but am willing to do so if required.

Yes, I would say it is necessary. It will keep water, mud and road crap off the pump and filter. I just removed the plastic one from the 86 560 and it was attached with 10mm hex head sheet metal screws. I can't remember how the '73 was attached. Are they machine screws? Maybe you could use a large hex head metal screw as a replacement.

I tried using sheet metal screws. The largest I was able to find were a #14.Not big enough, they went in but fit "loose" and wouldn't tighten down.Maybe I need to look for a metric size equivalent??
I think it should have hex head type screws.I went yesterday to a PNP yard where there had been a 450SLC .Unfortunately,it was no longer in the yard or I would have removed the shield and screws.
I doubt I'd find a 560SL in the PNP,but I might find a SEL.If they had a plastic rather than metal cover it at least wouldn't rattle and make racket.
That is worth checking out!!

My spouse is gone until tomorrow with the camera, but I'll try to get a photo of the shield for Mr panda ASAP

Ron,
I will look in the boxes tomorrow. I think I removed it from the '72 but heck that is over a year ago and I don't know where I put it. And no, I just took a shower so I am not going out to the '73 and crawling under it to get a picture. LOL
