380sl mixture baseline adjustment
Hi Guys,
A friend of mine has a 380sl 1985, it was running rich so they adjusted the 3mm allen screw behind the air intake, now it won't start or run at all, and the adjustment of this scew is way out, I figure it gets adjusted with a duty cycle meter or similar with the engine running but I cannot get it to start, is there a ball park method to get the thing to fire so I can then get it back to the correct position and find the real problem? Any help appreciated. |
There are plenty of posts on adjusting the mixture with a dwell meter or a meter with a duty cycle, try a Search.
To get it to start, push the air sensor plate down maybe 1/2" with a stick while someone cranks the starter. If the car starts, this sort of verifies that the mixture is the problem. Then you can richen the mixture, going 1/8 turn (CW looking down) at a time and trying to start. If it won't start with the plate pushed down, then you need to verify that the pump is running, check fuel pressure, etc. |
Thanks for your reply,
I removed one injector line and adjusted it until it let fuel flow when the plate was just pushed slightly, it now fires but doesn't catch, I will try what you suggested later when I have someone available to crank it. Thanks again, I'll let you know how I progress Martin |
