SL600 129 trans leak

My 1995 SL600 is leaking trans fluid from the shift linkage shaft.
My Machanic said the trans has to be removed to replace the o ring on the shaft. There is quite a lot of fluid leaking out .
The car has 65,000 miles on it and the trans seems tight other wise.
Is there any other way to fix or to slow the leak down ?
Do I need to remove the trans?
I would except a few drops but what I have now is puddles.
My other question is can the 1996 and newer trans be used in the 1995 SL600 or would that be very involved?

I would think that removal of the valve body would be sufficient to get at the o ring.

You can put in the later 5 speed trans go with a 2000 or later model but you will have to get a stand alone transmission controller and be prepared to do some wiring and programing.

Contact whipplem104 on this sight. He sells the PCS controller and is the MB representative for PCS. You will see several of his posts in the Performance Paddock area of this sight. He will also be able to advise you much better about replacing your seal.

I would love to see you do this and would love to here the outcome.

valve body seems lika solution to me too

Thank you for the replys.
My thought was to pull the valve body and then try to
push some silicon sealer in aganist the seal from the inside.
If pulling the valve body will give me access to the shaft then a new seal would be the answer.
At this point I think I will buy a repair manual , might keep me out of too much trouble.
Will keep you all posted on results.
