1995 500 SL SRS Light

Total Newbie to these cars. Just picked up 1995 500SL, SRS light stays on for 30 seconds or more but eventually goes out and does not reappear.

What should I be checking, can I buy a scanner for this system? I am moving from American Iron to this world and have much to learn!

The reason the SRS light stays on is a ring that sits behind the air bag in the steering wheel needs to be replaced. Mine does the same thing. Just had the combo switched replaced and saw the ring that I also need to replace. My car is a '92 and it is $500 dollar billing me to death. And I get the work done a very reasonable rates. Hope this is of some help. I cant remember what they wanted to change out that ring in my car but i did not have any more $ to dump into the car right now.

Thanks I will mention to my independent mechanic, who is doing other stuff to car right now. He indicated not to worry about it interestingly and is a Mercedes Master tech who has been doing this for 30 years.

That must be a very common wear item. I have seen it happening over and over. I don't think it is too hard to fix if you're inclined to do some of your work yourself.

Yes, my Indy who is a MB master tech said if light ultimately goes out, system is operationally OK, but could be clock spring. We are in the process of hunting down a better condition steering wheel, and will check at that point.
