EZL = Distributor Ignition System.
For the sake of those of us who are newbies or just can't remember the abreviations of hundreds of Mercedes ( translated from German ) acronymes, when posting, please include the full English device or part discription. Much appreciated. Thank you.

Diagnostic socket is located under the hood on the driver side fender mount.
Look for a round, black item about 2" dia. with a screw on cover and the cover will have a lanyard to prevent loss. |

on my 72 I have to hook the dwell meter through the coil resistor block to check accurately , cannot use the "typical" set up. Not sure on yours but may make you look at it differently

Thank you all for the tips and suggestions. I'm going to try the 2-3 pin voltage thing, and try something other than a nail too. I must say, it really does seem to be running much better (not so chunky on acceleration). At once point, I could flick the key for a split second, and it would start (but kinda lousy acceleration). Now it's harder to start, but seems to run better. Anyway, just wanted to say 'thanks' before going out to play. I'll report again this weekend. One final thing: The original question: What "dwell" number should I shoot for (22?)? And what's the timing (TDC)?

If you read it off the 8 cylinder scale, you want 22-23. This is the equivalent of a 50% duty cycle. Or you can go 30 off the 6 cylinder scale.
The formula is 360/# cylinders/2 to get 50%.

So, today I tried the 2 3 pin voltage test. It reads 13.8 volts. I don't think that is what I was expecting? Does this make sense, or lead us in a different diagnostic direction?
I'm still trying to dig up another analyzer so I can check duty cycle (and/or dwell). |
