hello guys I'm builing a 450slc rally car well how I get involve in this
I have lot of friends who run off road cars so I'm very pasionate with mercedes but most of my friends are ford toyota so I toll them I will build a mercedes rally car

anyway
I have 3 limitations right now
I don't speak very well english
Money
I'm not a mechanic
but I'm really pasionate person well this are my progress right now

just got a sec500 gray market engine M117.963 5.0L V8
well now my thinking is in the roller cage I don't know which cromoly is best for this car "any advice would be helpful"

Mercedes did use this model in off road rallies in the mid 70's.I will try to find the URL for a site in europe where they build replicas and supply parts.

Nice, consider getting proper racing seats. They are cheap as dirt and light. SEC seats weigh about the same as an extra passenger. Not ideal for racing replicas.

Turn a rear wheel through 20 revolutions (10 if it is a limited slip differential), count the number of rotations made by the input shaft and divide that number by 10. Thr result of that division will be the axle ratio. For example: If 20 turns of a wheel causes the input shaft to rotate 37 times; dividing 37 by 10 yields 3.7 which equates to a rear axle ratio of 3.70:1. It is possible to perform this exercise with only 2 (or 1) revolutions of the rear wheel and a careful counting of the revolutions made by the input shaft (which should be 3.7 in the above example), but the error factor in determining if the input shaft has rotated 3.5 or 3.6 or 3.8 or 3.9 times is too great to accept. By increasing the number of wheel revolutions your results will be much more accurate. If you don't know if the differential is limited slip or not, just rotate it 20 times. If your calculations yield a 6.40:1 ratio you'll know that it is indeed a limited slip differential since 6.40:1 is outside the normal range of axle ratios and the doubled number of turns necessary to compensate for a non-slip rear are not necessary. It is my understanding that limited slip differentials on these cars were quite rare - cherish it if you have found one.

Hello guys new update in my proyect I just found this saturday a Mercedes I don't know the model meaby 350slc or 450slc original euro when I arrive to the junk yard I only have 2 hours to close so I saw euro bumpers:eek: manual trans:eek:manual windows not electric:eek: euro headlights :eek: broken anyway I didn't have time so I remove the trans for my proyect and I just remove the front bumper and mirrors I will go this wensday for the differential and the manual windows anyway here pictures I didn't bring pedas and flight wheel but I will try to get this wensday if anyone want anything from this car let me know thanks http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m...a/P1030600.jpg

I have seen a few of the 4 speeds in various wrecking yards here in northern CA,but never in a 107 chassis!
Hope the parts remaining parts are still there when you return.I've learned the hard way to grab em while you can.
Too bad about those euro headlights...Those are worth something. IIRC you can replace the lenses on these so if the reflectors are decent you might want to get them anyway.

Is very rear to find manual trans in chassis number R107 I will go tomorrow for the flight wheel, starter, differential and take some pictures since is very rear car and if I can get the rear euro bumper thanks for the advice :)

The lenses are 32.55 each from AH. I have prchased them. They are Bosch OE.

Hello, I would suggest that you find the requirements for roll bars/ roll cages and 4/6point point seat belts from the rally organizations. Road racing is hard on the cars and the humans that drive them. J

I think the 450 SLC 5.0 was a factory sponsored class winner in the Paris to Dakar rally in 1979 or 80... I will try to post some pics I saved somewhere. I just like that car. Stillkicking myself for passing on a good 450 SLC 14 years ago. The SLC is more stable at speed than the SL because the SLC has a 14inch longer wheelbase, and is more aerodynamic too.

The manual transmission, if from a SL, is from an early (72 or 73) 350 SL. THe early automatic was a 3 speed automatic. The later 4-speed automatic was used in the rally car and the SL/SLC 450s and all the 500s across the product line because Mercedes didn't make a manual that could take the torque. You might blow up the manual, especially running the 500 SEC engine, but what have you got to lose? Worst case, put the automatic back in. The factory team kept the air conditioning! Use heavy duty chassis springs and 3 bump spring pads in the pertches. They rallied the car in fairly stock trim.
