90 300 SL, running hot.

I'm working on an SL for a customer, and his car is running hot, it sounds like a viscous fan problem, he put in on his own, "the most expensive thermostat available at autozone" I did warn him against that, and to get a good one from our fair forum. told him to flush and refill with G-05 coolant, and pointed him towards the viscous fan rebuild link over on the Diesel Discussion side. more than likely, he'll bring it to me, and if he does, I'd like to be on top of any known problems with this vehicle.
thanks!

Compare with an infrared thermometer near temp guage sensor in intake manifold to see if temperature indicated on gauge is accurate, if not, try sensor, it's cheap, if that is OK, replace thermostat, it's cheap and coolant flush, then fan clutch, then more expensive radiator and waterpump as last resort.
