1985 380SL O2 Sensor Warning Light
Today, I put a new battery in a friend's 1985 380SL. It is an immaculate car with 35K miles. The car started easily and ran fine, but the oxygen sensor light came on. I asked him about it and he said it came on in 2003 and that his mechanic (very respected locally) told him not to worry about it.
Hmm. I know that the late 1985 cars had upgraded electronics. Did any of them have the O2 sensor light turned on by the lamda brain, or were they all turned on by the speedometer? What was the mileage if it's controlled by the speedo? I answered these questions six years ago on this forum (link below), but I after seeing this car, I have doubts. http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/sitemap/t-95030.html Thanks,

I have a 1985, and it definitely does have a magnet/sensor on the speedometer for this purpose - I saw it when I repaired my odometer gears. Sure enough, I have 140K miles and the 02 light socket is energized - and I have a newish O2 sensor.

Thanks. Is it possible the light turns on at 30K? That would have been close to the mileage in 2003, as he only drives it to play golf on Saturdays.
I have seen 60K in various places including alldatadiy and MB service literature.

The friend decided he wants to lose the light. Is this a pull the steering wheel and cluster operation, or is there a quick and dirty way?
This is a very nice, very original car, and I would like to do as little as possible to it.

Unfortunately
It is a pull the cluster - at least that is what I ended up doing, after asking the folks at ASC and Don Pool...

On my car, there is small relay near the emergency brake pedal that has an electricle connector link to the ODO. At 30k on the ODO, that relay is what triggers the O2 light. Manual states to remove the connector at 30k miles. Light will go off never to return.

Bizarre ...
I looked at the ETF for 1980 and 1985 SLs. Sure enough, 1980 shows a "Mileage Counter" supplying power to the lamp. How exactly it counts the miles is a mystery, since it doesn't appear to be connected to anything else.
But in 1985 the connection is off the speedometer.
