I hate to brag but my 1983 380sl is alive!

Just passed the california smog test inspection. YEAAAAAAAAAAA

174500 miles, replaced the 02 sensor. Installed a rebuilt drivers side head from a pick pull junk yard. 70 bucks. original head had a bad guide.
Time to re register the beauty and drive the hell out of it.

My test numbers were as follows;15mph / 25mph
CO 13.1 / 13.1
O2 2.73 / 2.64 not happy with the high O2, may adjust air screw
HC 67 / 57
CO .59 / .57
NO 1104 / 931 squekead by on NO (1106 and 936) were max.

I may paint the car now that is driveable.
I will drive to Lake tahoe on Saturday with the new ragtop. Love the SL's

I don't think my car will win any awards, is my daily driver and it shows.
The NO appears to be directly related to operating temp, jump the electric fans, remove thermostat, install cooler thermostat, who knows I have 364 days or maybe 2 years before I have to worry about it again.

Does your car have an air pump?

If your car has air injection that would explain the high O2 numbers
NOx is more likely to be either a timing,EGR (if equipped?),or weak cat issue
I don't have reference materials handy as I'm home, not at the smog shop. CA is making it harder all the time, especially on older cars. They keep changing the cut points as they want to see higher failure rates. They can then send you to Gold Shield repair stations where the goal is to get you to average or below on your particular car. They don't like vehicles that "squeak" by as they assume they will likely be failing emissions long before their next test!
Glad you passed and enjoy your top down summer driving.I know I enjoy driving my SL a lot!

The car has air pump, no egr. The timing is set at spec for the test. I think the cra will probably run better if I adjust the timing, it probably needs to be advanced a few degrees.
Time to drive it.

I will be going to tahoe from the bay area, over 9000 feet at times. Does the timing need to be adavanced or retarded for altitude, I can't remember.
I am pretty sure the car runs better with advanced timing but at altitute?
