Rockin' out the stereo - 380SL

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, so please feel free to move it.

Came up with what appears to be an AWESOME solution to the lack of speaker mounting positions in the SL.

When I got the car it had a 15 year old Sony CD that had been put in to replace the original Becker unit (which I also still have if anyone wants / needs it).

One speaker was entirely dead, other on its last legs.

Ended up with a new Kenwood KDC-HD545U - HD radio / FM / AM / USB - ipod or direct USB / with a Sirius Satellite controller / CD. Infinity Kappa 32.9 3.5" speakers and a Boss 8" self powered subwoofer.

The Infinity's fit in the stock mounting positions with only 1 drill hole for the mounting screw - you WILL need a VERY strong drill bit, as I broke three before I got smart enough to break out the titanium tipped bits.

The Boss unit fits nicely in the passenger footwell under the floor mat and there is an easy access point at the back of the dash to run power directly to the positive crossover point in the passenger side at the back of the hood.

The sound is excellent.

Install was about 3 hours - but I had to run the Sirius antenna twice as - as luck would have it - I was putting the last piece of trim back into place -the stainless trim piece over the passenger side threshold - it caught the wire and cut it before I realized what had happened. Was lucky that I happened to have a spare Sirius antenna lying around.

Everything is invisible and looks stock. Sound is exceptional considering the limitations inherent in the lack of mounting space in the car. If you are a bass fanatic, Boss makes a 10" and 12" units that would probably also fit in the front of the footwell. The 8" only goes to about 32 hz -- plenty of thump for rock and roll.

If anyone is interested, wants to see photos or wants information about how I accomplished the install, let me know.

Scottie

You know better than to post something like this and not include pictures especially of the sub mounting!

Hey Scottie:
Thanks for the write-up.
I just sent you a PM.
My original stock Becker seems to have gone kaput and I would definitely be interested in yours if you are no longer using it. Details via PM?
Thanks
Mike
