Opinions on 1992 500 SLs...
Hello SL Peaches,
I am looking around for another car to add to my collection. What is your opinion of the 92 SL 500? I have 3 to pick from at the moment. I like working on my cars myself, so please comment on what it is like to work on this engine. Water pump job as straight forward as an M103? Timing chain interval? I am trying to avoid 1993 to 1995 models as the wiring harness seems to be a very expensive problem. I doubt my purchasing budget can take me to 1996+ cars. A very common issue seems to be the soft top actuators, 2 out of 3 cars that I am looking at have non functioning soft tops, but they mention it can be opened manually... Just looking for a slightly newer, more powerful 2 seater car. Does anyone daily drive their cars to work?

I bought a 92 with 52,000 on it a couple years ago. I have had no real problems with it at all.

If you'd be satisfied with a manual top, just get a 107...
Personally I'd stay away from a 129 with inoperable top. Leaky cylinders aren't that expensive to repair, but beyond that.... |

I personally would stay away from the combination of CIS, ASR and virtually no diagnostic system. In the unlikely event that you found an LH car with an original wiring harness replacement would be about $600, not a real big deal in the bigger picture of maintaining one of these cars.

That 1992 will have the same wiring harness issue...but chances are it has already been replaced with the 'better' harness. The later cars after 1997 are thought to be the best ones by many people....if you can afford to go newer.
The SL with the I6 or V8 are not hard to work on yourself (IMO)...and with the forums like this one you'll almost never be alone with a problem that you can't resolve. Great time to buy any R129....they are sooo cheap now. Last edited by Jim's500E; 08-23-2010 at 03:35 PM. |

If money is an issue to the point where you can afford a '92 but not a '96, you should stay out of the market. A 107 would be a better car for you. There are many possible expensive repairs on the 129 - these cars are not for the faint of heart or wallet.

92s are CIS which did not have the biodegradeable harness.
