Heat/Climat Control Issue

Lets see if anyone can make sense out of this one:
88 560 SL, 160K
I have luke warm heat on start-up (on any of the vent selections) even when the coolant temp is up. I got gas the other day and when I started the car the heat was back; for about 10 minutes then luke warm again. So I shut it off at a stop light and the heat was back again, any ideas? Vacuum bleeding down?

The blower is working all the time, just blowing warm air. This is a relatively new thing, the car has always had a great heater.

Thanks!

-John

could be heater core issue, or aux heat pump? ( not sure yours has one)
Is the line into the firewall hot?
If not could be Tstat not functioning properly

John,
When similar symptoms happend in my '87 560SL, it turned out to be a failing/sticking monovalve. $40 replacement part/15min job solved my problem.

John,
I meant to ask you before, what happens when you turn the temp wheel to max? Also, what happens when you push the defrost button?

Hi Bob,
Temp to max gives me colder air than temp just before max.
Haven't tried the defrost. I unplugged the monovalve and now I have massive heat!

R/R monovalve, that is the issue, heater core has been ruled out!

Something else is going on here...

Set at Max, cool air?
One notch before max, air is warmer...
Unplugged monovalve, hot air...

Set at Max is the same as pulling the plug from the monovalve, essentailly. When current is removed from the monovalve, the valvel defaults to OPEN, thus, heat. You have observed this...
What does not pan out is that you did not get heat when set to max. Repairing the monovalve is a good idea for a number of reasons, if the system is old, but I do not think it is your problem. Sounds like, to me, you have a problem in the feedback circuit, in either your dash sensor, the evaporator sensor, or the climate controller itself.

Similar issue has been discussed ad nauseum, on the "other" forum, http:///www.bewnzworld.org/forums.

Good luck sorting it out...

If the climate control unit was bad , I thought the default was all heat? You may be right now that I think about it , may be something else. But for less thatn $40 and 20 minutes work I'd start with monovalve
