Don't touch the boots unless you can feel or hear something in the joint. The manual shows the procedure for replacing and putting the special grease in. It would be easier to replace the entire unit.

All seriousness aside, could the body in th trunk have finally turned into a zombie, found the toolkit, and be trying to get out?

your card in the spokes reminds me of a problem I had -- see this series of posts:

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/sl-forum/72444-fluttering-noise-acceleration.html

you might want to jump to the end and then go back and read it -- turned out to be the rear axle needing to be replaced and new bearings installed. Best of luck in your search!

Thanks Dan, read your saga, could be my issue , not sure, mine is on deceleration and there is no play , no slop in the axle or the joints, the boots look new, I am now leaning to spindle gears in the diferential, I may be crazy..
I snuged up some brakets around the exhaust, and I thought that was it , but nada, still there. Strange thing is that is comes and goes, some days I tool around all day without a noise, other days , there at the start. Seems worse when cold, but that may be my imagination
Oldsinner, I THINK we are talking about the same thing??

Because its a sport car, people drive them like they stole it.Flex plates can break from shifting hard and just age.It between flywheel and convertor. You can crawl under and look thru inspection acess.Look for triangle metal and cracks around bolt holes. It could be rubbing against bell housing .
