Test the OVP relay 380sl

is there a pin test that can be done on the ovp relay to know if its good?

Pin 31a and 30a are leads to a diode... set VOM on ohm and check, then reverse polarity. One way should show continuity, the other should not...

Usually, the diode shorts out and allows current both ways when faulty, but can also blow "open".

Not sure about the resistor, indicated on the schematic, so any check there for me, would be for continuity. If none, then probably blown open as well...

okay its gooood whew yeah!! big thanks. **fyi for location on the 380 slc the ovp - the passenger footwell right side is the kick panel , above fuse bank, just left of the big black fuel inj relay if your stuffed way in looking at. if looking from door/outside the black fuel inj relay, peek over it towards eng its the relay right behind finj relay.

Be aware that the '81 380SL uses a different OVPR than the ' 82 and later cars. This one is the small red relay with built in fuse. By looking through as small hole on the back side it will show if the fuse portion is blown. It can't be replaced and you have to get a new relay. Be careful when using booster cables that they're connected properly or you can easily blow the fuse.
The late OVPR is longer and silver in colour. It has a 10 amp blade style fuse that can be changed. If the fuse blows the engine will speed up at idle and on some cars the frequency valve will stop working. I've seen where the only thing that made any of this stuff work right again was a new relay and that was on a 560SL.

pictures of relays with descriptions 107 450sl 1977

Can anyone post a picture of the relays (kick panel passenger side) and description? What is an ovp relay? any help appreciated. Regards, Abe g

I WISH!

In the UK version the OVP is in the same place BUT of course the steering wheel, pedals, controls, etc are also on the right ( that is CORRECT ;) side) - it's quite a twisty exercise getting to the OVP on mine ( or the fuse panel itself for that matter!)

cheers

Jim

Which is evidence enought that your steering wheel and pedals are on the WRONG side... :)

Ha Ha

Last month I might have agreed with you when I was sorting MY OVP!

Just as a point of information, those components are a Zener Diode and fuse. A Zener diode will act like a regular diode up to a predetermined voltage across the reverse direction, then it will conduct fully in the reverse direction. This causes enough current to flow that the fuse blows.

The Zener can change values due to age and temperature cycles. If this has happened, you should just get a new unit. Another discussion elsewhere mentioned getting one from ********** for USD 27.00. Get a couple other things to get your order over $ 50.00, and you get free shipping.

Hope this helps,
Scott
