Problem with the SL crowd is most people want all original, close to showroom condition as possible. Engine swaps and the like are frowned upon. Almost all SL's are "pleasure" cars, weekend drivers at most so the average condition of any given car for sale is pretty high up there.
I sold a beautiful 120,000mi 560SL last year for $7,000. Had minor wear and tear on the seats, dash, and two quarter sized spots where the clear was gone. Had I invested another $500-750 in it, I probably could have gotten $10,000 from the right buyer.
