1996 E230 engine imobilizer

is it possible to bypass/disable permanently the engine imobilizer?
have been stuck in middle of nowhere with a car that, after stopping, wouldn't start again! had flashing red and green light on rearview mirror, engine wouldn't fire, but spun over. it was frightening. but after a few minutes off, it miraculously started and was seemingly fine. it has happened a few times since, exactly the same. if vehicle turned off for a few minutes, it restarts without problem!!!
have pulled out the k40, got the part number. its $540 in australia. gave it a tap, pulled the fuses in and out and put back in place. car still going but am afraid it will happen again. the last time i was unfortunately blocking traffic at a servo and was stressed i would have to get towed away. if the k40 is replaced can this be done without a problem or will it require the car computer system to acknowedge the new part for it to work. should the battery be disconnected during operation?
thanks for your ongoing help and support peachparts.

1996 E 230 Immobilizer problem??

Thank you for drawing my attention to the relay box K40 (in my case K2 part no A 210 540 04 72). It has five robust open mechanical relays inside the cover, which were in need of a good clean at contact points. This I have done. No more (red and green lights flashing) starting problems so far. Was able to remove unit for cleaning by disconnecting the live 12 Volt plug (B) first, then the others. Hopefully this will solve my problem and the info will be of use to others. Ed
