Engine stopped running

My 85 380SL all of a sudden will not start. The starter works fine and the engine starts to cough but will not start. The fuel pump and filter were replaced recently and the car was tuned. What is the procedure to diagnose the problem? Can the diagnosis jack be used without a special tool? Don't know where to begin, please help, thank you.james2182@yahoo.com

When you say the car was "tuned", what do you mean (what was done). Did the car fail to start immediately after any of the work mentioned?

Why was the fuel pump changed?

To diagnose, you will need a FSM, a set of gauges, and a lot of patience...
Things to check are:
Fuel pump pressure
Fuel pump flow at pressure
Control pressure
injector function (pop test)
WUR function
just to mention a few...

Look for cracked or broken air hoses on the Jetronic system. Air that bypasses the Fuel Distributor through an air leak can cause a no-start condition. Due to the age of the vehicle, I would look for air leaks first.

Then, pull the injectors to see if the Jetronic system is delivering fuel to the cylinders. Do you hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds when you turn the key to start?

Then pull a spark plug and crank the engine to see if you are getting spark. You will need to ground the plug to determine if the plug fires.

Regards

The fuel pump was replaced because the old one was noisy. the car was tuned two months before the no start and ran like a peach till it died. I opened the valve covers and found broken pieces of the timing chain rails. I need to replace the rails and hope no other damage occurred. What is the procedure to replace broken timing chain plastic rails?

You should get a service manual to do the timing chain work.

From what you indicated, the engine timing is likely off. There may be some other issues as well that will become apparent once you take it apart.

Definitely do NOT try and start... You have probably jumped time. If lucky, only enough to cause cranking issues, but the possibility exists that you have crashed valves, busted pistons, broken cam towers, etc.

This is serious ****!

Smile 1983 380SL Failed to Start (Fuel Pump Relay)

Thanks to the previous contributors for helping with my recent dilemma.

I have a 1983 380SL 107-045 that had exactly the same symptoms. It has never failed to start in the 12 years I have owned the vehicle, until a few days ago when it turned over willingly but failed to run. There was no excessive smell of gasoline when I removed the air filter so I suspected Fuel delivery rather than poor ignition.
After consulting the forum for ideas Fuel Filter / Fuel Pump / Pump Relay seemed the most probable causes.
Providing direct 12 V supply to the pump had it running immediately. With the pump running the engine cranked and fired right away. Looks like it's the relay then.

The next problem was finding the right relay, which turned out to be easier than I thought. It is located behind the glove box to the right of the Blower Control Module. It was easy to locate and remove. A replacement was Relay (001 545 5305) ordered from Amazon for $53.00. Problem solved.
