1975 450SL D-Jet Injection Problem....

I have had a sporadic problem with stumbling and rough running of my D-Jet equipped '75 SL. We've narrowed the problem down to the fuel injection trigger points in the distributor.

Dealer wants roughly $1,200 for the new part...is there another member here who has dealt with this D-Jet problem who has a RELIABLE source where this part can be obtained at a considerably lower cost? I don't want to bother with trying a used one!...(thank you e-bay seller who sold me a POS used one that didn't work!) I want to keep the car 100% OEM and am NOT interested in any of the aftermarket "electronic" upgrades/injection replacement solutions...

If you know the part number(s) of the item(s) you need, it should be an easy task to google for the best price.

Unfortunately I do not have the part number...dealer looked it up via my VIN, but would not give me the part number...guess he knew at that price, I'd be shopping around!

If you know the part that needs to be replaced, just call a few online Mercedes parts dealers and when they quote you the price, ask for the part number to confirm they are quoting the correct part. Once you have the part number, you can shop around.

There are a few online parts fiche that you should be able to get the part number or a part number. Once you have a part number, ask the dealer if the part number has changed and if so, ask what the new part number is. Make that parts guy confirm a cross to a new part number.

I run into the situation you describe occasionally where a dealer doesn't want to reveal the part number. That's not a good dealer, because if you are buying the part to install yourself, you need the part number to ensure you are getting the correct part.

Regards

The above link has some good D-Jetronic troubleshooting information.

Try poking around on the Russian site. It's enough English to often find the right part number.

they are expensive , Rowdie has found what you are going to have to pay new. they can be serviced, but not always with a good result. Just make sure your distributor shaft is not the issue

there are plenty of posts about the EFI points in the vintage sections. Read up before you act.

More often than not, they're dirty. Clean them. The quick way is to rub the contact points across a dollar bill. Spraying electrical contact cleaner on them doesn't hurt.

The points themselves are rarely the problem component. They get dirty because stuff gets in that space that shouldn't be there. Part of that is the distributor shaft can wobble from wear, allowing oil in, not to mention just screwing up timing.

You can get the part number from the Mercedes online Electronic Parts Catalog .

http://epc.startekinfo.com/epc/welcome.jsp

You will need a credit card to open the account, but it will not be charged. They only want to use it to verify residency.

You will be able to look up each part for your car by using the VIN.

OK...I've got the new "trigger points" or pulse generator (depending on who you talk to...)

Any trick to installing them? Looks like the distributor will need to come out of the engine first... Other than the 2 screws that hold the module to the base of the distributor, is there any other trick I should know about prior to attempting this? Looks like they should just slide in and out without a fuss??...any lubrication required or do they just go in "dry"?...
