Update, getting ready to retrofit my new points ( they are a thin gof beauty) with new to retro plug adaptation, tested and functioning MPS ready to go in as well
I am keeping my fingers crossed that all will be good - goal is better idle and leaner running
oh and BTW the latest from BOSCH on the repair kit.

Hello, Ron!

We are still testing the prototypes. I suggest you sign up for our newsletter on http://www.automotive-tradition.com - you will get informed then once the repair kit is available.

Ron,
I tried measuring my brand new triggers vs an old set. First measured distance rubbing blocks were apart and then measured thickness of rubbing blocks themselves.

I have one of those cheap digital calipers, but it doesn't quite reach the one set of points.

Results:
New blocks were 0.349" thick including the metal backing.
Old ones were from 0.348 to 0.338 thick.

But I need a better way of measuring!

I will do a test with the new set to check the angles that points stay open/closed.

Hope your car runs better with the new set! (I am keeping mine in box until I really need them!)

Graham

gotta help, I did a "basic" ohm reading of the time the new ones stay closed and I would estimate that is is between 100-105 degrees. The noticible difference from my old set is that all 4 on the new were the same- I will know more in a few days

Hey Guys,

Anyone have source for the trigger points at this point? I'm having similar issues as MP and (as he predicted) it's looking like the trigger points. Mine all look good, but are each opening for about 140-150deg (super-guesstimate). I can only adjust the MAP so far before idle goes to hell & I'm still running rich. I can also feel that tell-tale albeit subtle pulse in the idle.

Are any available anywhere? Well, short of stealership prices?

I did not know that the MB Classic Center was on eBay
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mercedes-Benz-Classic-Trigger-Points-3-5-V8-Engines-/270782833538?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3f0bea2382

Also: $475? Yikes!

yours are saying there is hope that Bosch is making a retro kit to fix the old ones , I am on the mailing list when it is suppose to introduced but have not heard much since early spring, Keep you eye on ebay , they occasionally come up there, of course you want "new"
BTW my new TP's stayed closed for approximately 100 degrees, open 260

Ron,
The points in the eBay ad ARE the Bosch DIY kit. They have to be soldered onto the old support plate/connector. I guess this part would fit both the old and the new style (with pigtail).

Only cheap alternative is to adjust old ones by trial and error or try and adapt VW triggeerr points.

Not sure if this helps or not but I set the whole distributor in my tester and spin it at idle speed. By moving the probes around I've found that all the trigger points have 25 degrees of dwell angle on my machine.
All of the working sets I've tested so far all show the same readings as well as a new set I tested so I'm using that reading as a base amount.

If they're not working I get zero reading but I'm not sure how much voltage is running through the points since my tester is designed for ignition points. Using my ohm meter on the tester they all showed that they were making good contact. I would imagine that worn trigger points wouldn't stay open as long as new ones.

The problem that MP was having & that apparently I am having is that the trigger points are staying open too long causing a rich-running condition.

Graham & MP: Am I right in thinking that the wear part in this situation is the flat spot that the cam pushes on on the points? The contacts on my points look immaculate & seem to have quite a good deal of thickness left to them. But the points are just staying open too long...

I'm wondering if there'd be any way to shim those pads, but I have a feeling that tolerances we're talking are pretty minute and it'd be damn hard to hit the mark precisely...

As the cams turn, the high points of the cam lobes push against the fiber followers and the points open. When the fiber cam followers wear, then the points open a little later and close a little earlier. In other words, the points stay closed for longer.

Or at least that's how I recall it.

Correct, when the points close the injectors fire, this should be for a rotation of approximately 100 of the dizzy shaft. Because of the wear of the shaft pads his are staying closed too long

you can bend and play all you want, and may improve, but as I have tried and Graham has as well , most of it ends up as a guess. I have heard that you can retrofit vintage VW TP's into the set up , but I'd want to try that on a spare . Graham indicates BOSCH is selling the rebuild kit now, have you gone to their website or emailed them. They do respond, at least they have to me in the past

I haven't spoken to Bosch yet, just noticed that MB Classic is selling a rebuild kit on eBay now for almost $500. I think Graham's guess was that MB Classic must have gotten the kit from Bosch.

I'll try emailing them this week.

And, yes, I got my open & closed crossed on the TPs. I've been jumping back & forth btw the D-Jet and the KE-Jet on my 300E and my head is spinning...
