Hey, maybe I could get a "coppy right" on the description I used:- "clean classic".

Well you beat me then. I'm post war around 1954.

Imagine me, a 30 year vetran restoring only old MB cars, and not knowing what is, or isn't, a classic car. Oh, the horror......

Back to actually talking about trigger points:

I just got pricing from Bosch and it looks like we won't be getting a break from them either:

Good day!
List price in Germany will be 350 EUR net. First delivery from our plant will be next week. I guess it will be available a few days later.

So I guess that exhausts my options other than getting lucky on NOS or the pick & pull.

Does anyone have the Bosche part numbers handy for the first & second generation sets?

So how much wear is too much? I've looked at new and used sets side by side and really couldn't see much of a diffference.

How long the points stay closed is only one of the inputs that sets fuel volume out the injectors as all of the other parts in the system affect it as well. Would raising or lowering fuel pressure lean out a rich running condition?

no on the FP, I am living proof that worn injectors are the root of all evil, as long as the other key components are rules out and engine tuning to spec.
4spd, did we talk about distributor shaft wobble? Worn dizzy is specualted as an issue as well. I eliminated that by going to optical points. the trigger point part number original is 000 158 01 19. The second generation with the pig tail connection are 000 158 03 19

Sweet, mp. Thanks!

Dizzy shaft has no side to side wobble, but does have a small bit of play (couple of mm?) up & down. I've gone full pertronix, so points aren't a problem.

End play can cause some vibration as well as raidal play. There should be no end play at the drive gear. The cam lobe shaft is held in place by a small circlip ( which is tricky to install ) so it should not move up and down.
Sometimes the radial play is at the bearings and often there is play between the main shaft and the cam lobe shaft. This can be fixed but it's not easy to do. Since this system is CD ignition, the points last a long time and the distributor rarely sees any service, which of course, makes these two parts wear out.
Older points and coil distributors are often much less worn because they see points replacement once in a while and hopefully a few drops of oil on the wick under the rotor.

If anyone is looking for a set that may work or a spare to experiment on, there's one on eBay right now. I email the guy to ask about how exactly it "tested and works great" since he offers no warranty of any kind. He was kind enough to not get back to me at all.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290589585924&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

I just picked up a "nearly new" set from a CA dismantler that I know & trust for $250. I'm not complaining.

with "used" there simply is no way to tell, just gotta chance it and hope for the best. For the most part, every set will "work" as tested , just dealing with wear, and as we have proven , no way to tell really how much wear will impact a particular car and its set up

Can someone help me out here? My mind is totally crossed up right now:

How long are your "new/good" trigger points staying open or closed for (in degrees)? I just measured my old set vs. my newer set and somehow got my my mind all tied up in knots and have, like, Trigger Point Vertigo right now...
