107 HOOD LATCH

My euro 83' 500SL hood latch does not open the engine hood anymore; is there an emergency pull strap somewhere reachable from under the car that I can use to open the hood?

If the wire cable is still attached, you may be able to dismantle the lever inside the car, and then pull directly on the cable to open the hood.

I did this on one car - can't recall if it was the SL or the 300D. Then I put a short piece of split tubing over the wire at the under dash lever to take up the slack and provide more movement at the front. That was years ago and it is still like that!

Caused me confusion for a moment ( HOOD - that's the soft top - Oh you meant the Bonnet )

The most likely place for it to go is the nipple at the back of the actual lever in the car ( either the nipple OR the end of the actual lever has broken.

Ether way you "should" be able to get at the cable from the footwell by removing some of the trim and pull the end of the cable with a pair of mole-grips or similar.

(In mine it was the end of the lever which had broken)

If the cable has broken at the latch end I'm afraid I've no idea - though I would think there might be a way to get at it from below to operate the latch with a "long twisty rod" or something similar.

I am trying to find link , but you can fabricate a hook of sorts to open the latch if it is broken at the hood, if there it is a major PIA

If you need a new handle (the one inside, down by the drivers' knee), tell me. The dealership was sent one by accident, and gave it to me. I'll get it to you for postage.

Thank You Scott; I'll take you up on the offer since the problem is the hood latch that is not pulling the cable anymore. Send me a PM with postage charges and address.

BTW a great Thank You all for the assistance and suggestions.
