New Rag Top?

Phil Here. Hi, Guys. Has anybody Installed a new Soft Top other than the usual Cloth or Canvas version. I am looking to apply a Pin point Vinyl soft top to my SL. I would appreciate any feed back?...................

Thanks in advance and have a nice holiday.

Ultraviolet light is hell on long-chain polymers.

If you prefer the look of the vinyl... go for it.

If you're choosing vinyl because of cost, forget it.

Soft Top

Phil Here. Re: the Vinyl top issue? Cost does not come into play, there is very little difference in the price of the tops.

The top that came with my car was original Tan color cloth, It got destroyed some time ago when the hydraulics started to leak. There was no way to clean the fabric and I also hated the tan color with my pretty Ice Blue exterior color.

Now comes into play the idea of vinyl, Harts Pin Point vinyl is available in a lot more colors than the Harts cloth. [one color blue] I was thinking also that it would be much easier to clean and I would have a choice of some very nice Blues to match my exterior.

I don't want to spend 1,200 bucks on a new Vinyl soft top and have the application look crappy, I also want it to fit correct when It is up.

I don't use the soft top very often only when there is a chance of rain ?
I "Roll" with my top down for 9 months out of the year and three months with the Hard top and A/C on in the summer.....

I do appreciate any opinions but still wondering if anyone has Installed the vinyl soft top on the 500 SL. Thanks in Advance......................

soft top installation

I installed a stayfast top on my 500 a couple of years ago via MB training dvd and i believe the install would be the same for your choice, but remember the plastic top will shrink in time whereas the stayfast will never. but the choice is yours, I have the install dvd available if needed, by the way the hardest part of the job for me was getting the D''''''' contact cement off the surfaces that the top is glued to, also MB does not have the contact cement that you will need so you will have to find another souce.....Good Luck...
