1976 450SL Need Opinion on Removal of AC Condenser

I have a 1976 450SL Weekend Driver Only.. Mostly all Original, Overall condition 6 of 10. Not a Concourse Car But Not Trashed.

The AC Compressor and Lines are all there, but not functional, probably too expensive too fix. I also don't need or use AC - just put the top down!

I am considering cutting out or removing the AC Condenser for a few reasons, 1) To allow more air to flow over the radiator and also considering putting in an aftermarket electric fan over the radiator.
In addition, I am trying to 'Tidy' up best I can the inside of the engine,
if that makes sense.

I would welcome a few opinions if this is a "Bad idea' for future resale value or if from a practicality standpoint 'Good Improvement' to more efficient cooling, keeping the engine bay cooler, thus better performance and improved mileage.

Good Idea or Bad Idea?

Thanks,

Scott

Answer

IMO; it will cut your resale value.

The general rule among car collectors/car buyers:

* If there are no visible modifications it is stock.

* Visible modifications = fear of a hack job.

Why not repair it yourself ??

I think it would be best to have it repaired and operational. If that is deemed too expensive, then just leave it alone. I doubt if the condenser is affecting engine cooling all that much. If you feel you need an additional electric cooling fan to keep the engine temp down, then there is probably another cooling issue somewhere. Look for an indepentant A/C auto shop. If the compressor checks out OK, most likely the problem is only a leak caused by a bad seal or O ring. However, if that leak is inside the dash area, getting to it can be expensive. Just my 2 cents if it was my car.
