450 SL transmission
I recently purchase a 1977 450SL with 170,000 well maintained miles. On my way home with the car from Kansas City to Arkansas, I noticed that the car stopped upshifting from 1-2. It will shift by letting off the accelerator. Also, on the 2-1 down thift there is an audible thump in the transmission. It goes into reverse fine though. The transmission fluid is brown so I ordered a gasket and filter set and plan to change and see if that helps, I've also read that the B-2 piston on these models is a problem. Any suggestions?

An obvious suggestion is to rebuild it if the funds are available. My '79 has around 108K miles. We noticed the transmission was leaking so I decided to get it rebuild instead of just re-sealed. Because of the age and relative low miles(some parts deteriorate becase of lack of use), PLUS the fact that I am now driving it daily and putting on 5 times more miles than has been historically, I sleep better at night. Additionally, I plan on keeping this car for a long time.
I would think though that at 170K miles, given the problems you are observing, that a rebuild is the recommended solution. It will be interesting to hear from the other 450SL owners.

Don't forget to drain the torque converter also, you have to rotate it until you see the allen screw plug on the bottom.
The shift problem could be vacuum, or the modulater. I think if it was the B-2 valve you wouldn't have reverse. Get a mityvac hand vacuum pump, about $25 and start checking for leaks, also look for oil in the line to the modulater, if oil is found the valve is bad. Jerryb |
